went for the jc talks today. first up was the team from rjc, which was given 2 hours to deliver their presentations. the rjc principal was quite humorous, getting us all awake and listening. not a bad start, really. then jamie reeves went up to give a brief introduction of the humanities programme at rjc, which was rather brief since they still had another hour after the hcjc presentation to give a separate talk on the rjc humanities programme. i didnt know he was that humorous, from what i saw from his appearances as an espn commentator for the EPL show, but he was as animated as when he is speaking on TV. then their biology teacher gave her presentation, and then it was over to the ri class of 2002 to give theirs. as expected john samuel talked to us about life in rjc and all that. at the end of 2 hours, i felt that the rjc talk was really quite good, giving a macro and micro view on rjc and life in rjc and so on.
had a half-hour break, and after that i decided to "keep my eyes open" and go for the hcjc talk. they started off with their principal giving a speech. next up, they showed us this long, almost too long, video on their orientation. bearing in mind they only had 1 hour for their presentation, i was thinking, what is your point of showing us that video? granted, we saw many people having loads of fun in the sun, running about aimlessly in the name of fun ... then the presentation by the students from hcjc wasn't any better. they continued giving the smaller picture of life in hcjc, like their 'fun' orientation programme (again?!) and their mid-autumn festival.
then that mr b guy -- who somehow reminded the gang of us of old mjr in animal farm -- went up to give a rather impressive presentation on the hwa chong humanities programme, and in the process of doing so threw dirt at rjc. he did say that hcjc pupils taking the hp at hc are more likely to get scholarships than their counterparts at rjc, which is true to a certain extent, but he prevaricated so much that he made it seem he was referring to hcjc as a whole, which i thought wasnt right. oh wells, we move on. after more crap by the students we moved on to Q&A. i decided to question the hcjc team's decision of not talking a thing about the other faculties, which seemed strange to me, so i asked their principal, "Sir, I think we all know even before this talk that Hwa Chong prides itself on its humanities programme, but what about their science faculty. Could you tell us more about your science faculty, and for that matter, how it compares with RJC's?"
in his answer he was like telling us about how hcjc has a good science prog, and good students come out of it, but what about hard statistics, as compared to rjc? that one he left out quite obviously, which i leave up to you to interpret, bearing in mind old mjr had only previously been so quick to compare the statistics of hcjc humanities programme and rjc's.
after the whole thing, from the presentations alone, i gathered that: if humanities is the way to go for you, hcjc beckons (that is if you can make the cut in the first place). other than that, i like rjc better. but i felt rather disappointed with hcjc's style of hard-selling, it really spoiled it all. class speaks for itself, but some of the things in the presentation, esp by old mjr, were downright crass.
